Every bit of electrical work carried out in your home by your local electrician must be provided with a certificate.
There are no exceptions to this rule.
There are many different types, but the main ones are:
Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)
Minor works certificate (MWEIC)
Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)
Building compliance certificate
Work including, but not limited to, replacement light, swapping of accessories or replacing a broken socket would require a “Minor Works” certificate.
All certificates will show customer and property information and have a “schedule of test results” showing the circuits in question have been tested in accordance with BS7671 electrical wiring regulations.
Any jobs that require a new circuit, such as a replacement consumer unit (fuse-box), New shower circuit, an additional light in a special location (bathroom for example) or an electrical vehicle charge point (EV car charger) would require an “electrical installation certificate” and a “building compliance certificate”.
An electrical inspection of your home will require an “Electrical installation condition report”. These should be carried out before any fuse box upgrade, every ten years in a domestic property or every five years for rental. This will be an in-depth test of all the wiring of your property to assess the condition. These should be carried out correctly. Rushed and cheap certificates do not constitute a satisfactory inspection.
This is part of a schedule of test results. It shows a list of the circuits tested, various information about the protective devices, cable sized used and other information.
There will be one of these issued with any EIC, MEIWC or EICR’s
Building compliance certificate
This is a Building compliance certificate. It will be issued for works such as house rewires, new consumer units, EV car charging points and new circuits. Accompanying your schedule of test results and certificates.
To ensure your electrical work has been notified to the correct authorities, your local registered electrician MUST provide you with this certificate alongside the test results.
Again, there are no exceptions to the rule.
This is a small example but covers the importance of electrical certification. It shows the circuits have been tested for safety, the work has been notified to the correct authorities and the work is installed in accordance with the wiring regulations.
